Fin setups compared
The number of fins changes the trade between drive, hold and looseness. There is no best setup — there is one that suits the board, the wave and how you like to surf.

If your board has a five-fin box, you already own several boards. Riding it as a thruster one session and a quad the next is the cheapest experiment in surfing.
Thruster vs quad
This is the comparison people actually search for, and the honest answer is that they solve different problems.
A thruster — three fins of equal size — gives you a pivot point off the back fin. That is what lets you snap off the top and finish a turn in a tight pocket. It has been the default since the eighties because it does everything competently.
A quad removes the centre fin and adds a second pair on the rail. Without a trailing fin dragging, the board is faster in a straight line, and the paired rail fins give more hold through a long carve. Quads shine in two places that look opposite: gutless summer waves, where the speed matters, and steep hollow waves, where hold matters.
What you lose on a quad is the tight pivot. Turns are drawn out. Surfers who move from thruster to quad often say the board feels fast but that they cannot get it to snap.
Rule of thumb: if your complaint is "it feels slow", try a quad. If your complaint is "it will not turn where I want", stay on a thruster.
Surfboard fin size chart
Fin size is sold in bands keyed to rider weight, because a heavier surfer needs more fin area to get the same hold. Every major brand uses roughly the same grid.

The bands overlap deliberately. If you are between sizes, go smaller for looseness in small waves and larger for hold in powerful surf. Bigger fins are not better — an under-powered surfer on XL fins just feels locked in place.
What the fin numbers mean
- Rake (or sweep) — how far back the fin curves. More rake gives longer, drawn-out turns; less rake pivots tighter.
- Base — the length where the fin meets the board. A longer base means more drive out of a turn.
- Depth — how far the fin reaches into the water. More depth means more hold.
- Foil — the fin's cross-section. Flat inside faces on the rail fins generate lift; a symmetric foil on a centre fin works in both directions.
- Flex — stiff fins hold and drive; flexible fins load up and spring out of turns. Plastic flexes most, honeycomb sits in the middle, carbon is stiffest.
If you change one thing, change flex. Moving from stock plastic fins to a decent honeycomb set is the single most noticeable upgrade on most beginner and intermediate boards, and it costs a fraction of a new board.
FCS or Futures?
Two competing fin box systems, and they are not interchangeable — the fin has to match the box already glassed into your board.
FCS II uses two tabs and clicks in without a key, which is genuinely convenient on the beach. Older FCS boards use a screw-in twin-tab system. Futures uses a single long base that slides in and locks with one screw, which many surfers feel transmits flex more directly into the board.
Neither is better to ride. Check your board before buying fins — this is the most common wasted purchase in surfing.
