What surfboard volume actually means
Volume is the amount of space a surfboard takes up, measured in litres. It is the single number that tells you how much the board will float, and most shapers now print it on the stringer next to the length, width and thickness.
It matters because floating is most of surfing. A board with enough litres sits higher in the water, paddles faster, and gets you into waves earlier — which is the difference between catching six waves in a session and catching one. Too few litres and you sink, paddle harder, and miss things. Too many and the board stops responding: it skates over the surface, resists being put on a rail, and turns like a barge.
Length and width used to be how surfers described boards, and they still matter for how a board rides. But two boards can both be 6'0" and float completely differently depending on thickness and outline. Litres cut through that, which is why volume has become the number people shop by.
The Guild Factor: how surfboard volume is calculated
The method underneath this calculator is the Guild Factor, named after John Whitney Guild, who proposed tying board volume directly to the rider's body weight rather than to their height. The idea has since become the industry default, and most shaper volume charts are a version of it.
The formula is deliberately plain:
Volume (litres) = body weight (kg) × Guild Factor
The Guild Factor is just a ratio of litres per kilogram. A strong surfer riding a performance shortboard might be on 0.33. Someone learning on their first board might need 0.60 — nearly double the float for the same body weight.
Everything else is adjustment. Skill sets the starting ratio, then age, paddle fitness and wave type nudge it up or down. That is genuinely the whole engine — there is no hidden step, which is why the calculator above shows the running total rather than producing a number from nowhere.

Be honest when you pick one. Overrating your ability is the most common way people end up on a board they cannot paddle, and it is an expensive mistake to discover three sessions later. If you are between two levels, take the higher Guild Factor — extra float costs you a little performance, while too little float costs you waves.

Read across your weight, down to your ability, and treat the number as the middle of a band roughly two litres either side. Nobody surfs a decimal point.
Working out volume from board dimensions
Sometimes you are looking at a second-hand board with no litres printed on it, only the dimensions. You can estimate volume from length, width and thickness, but not with a clean geometric formula — a blank is a curved, tapered solid, not a box, so the real volume is a little over half of its bounding box.
The estimator below uses a fill factor of about 0.54 for shortboards, rising for longer and flatter outlines that hold their thickness further towards the nose and tail.

A 6'0" × 19.5" × 2.5" shortboard works out at about 31 litres, which is where boards of that size genuinely land.
Treat any dimension-derived figure as an estimate with a couple of litres of slack in it. Two boards with identical dimensions can differ by three or four litres depending on how much foam the shaper left in the rails. If the actual volume is written on the board, believe that instead.
When to add or drop volume
The Guild Factor gives you a baseline for an average session. Real conditions move it around, and the calculator applies these automatically.
Small and mushy waves
Weak, slow waves do not push you into anything. You have to paddle your way in, which means float does the work — add roughly 0.02 to your Guild Factor, or about two litres for an 80 kg surfer. This is why so many good surfers keep a groveller with a few extra litres for summer.
Powerful or hollow waves
Steep waves do the accelerating for you, and a board with too much float becomes hard to control on a late drop. Drop about 0.01. Step-up boards for serious waves are usually a touch narrower and thinner than a rider's everyday shortboard, not bigger, even though they are longer.
Age and fitness
Paddling is shoulder endurance, and shoulder endurance fades. From about 35 the recommendation edges upward, reaching roughly 0.03 extra past 55 — around two and a half litres for an 80 kg surfer. If you swim or paddle regularly you can pull a little back. There is nothing defeatist about this: riding the volume that matches your current fitness means more waves, and more waves is the entire point.
Wetsuit thickness
Neoprene floats. A 5/4 in winter adds noticeable buoyancy compared with boardshorts, so the same board feels slightly looser in summer than it does in February. The effect is real but small — under a litre for most people — and it is not worth owning two boards over. It is worth knowing when a board that felt perfect in January feels sluggish in July.
PU versus EPS: why the same litres float differently
Two boards can both say 31 litres and still sit differently in the water. Traditional PU (polyurethane) blanks with polyester resin are denser than EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam with epoxy resin, so an EPS board of the same volume floats higher and feels livelier underfoot.
The working rule among shapers is to take two to three litres off when moving from PU to EPS — a surfer on a 32 litre PU shortboard is usually well matched to about 29 or 30 litres in epoxy. The calculator applies 2.5 litres when you select EPS.
Neither is better. EPS is lighter and more responsive but can feel skittish in choppy water; PU has a heavier, smoother feel that many surfers prefer in powerful surf. It is a preference, not a ranking — but it does change the number you should be shopping for.

How to calculate surfboard volume?
Multiply your body weight in kilograms by a Guild Factor between roughly 0.33 and 0.60, depending on your ability. An 80 kg intermediate surfer at 0.39 needs about 31 litres. Then adjust for age, paddle fitness and the waves you surf. If you are estimating from a board's dimensions instead, multiply length × width × thickness in inches by about 0.54, then by 0.0164 to convert to litres.
How many litres should my surfboard be?
For most intermediate surfers it lands between 0.36 and 0.42 litres per kilogram of body weight — so 29 to 34 litres for an 80 kg rider. Beginners need considerably more, around 0.50, and someone on their very first board closer to 0.60. Use your honest current ability rather than the level you are working towards.
Does more volume make a surfboard easier to paddle?
Yes, up to a point. More float means you sit higher in the water with less drag, so you paddle faster and catch waves earlier. Past a certain point the board becomes physically bulky, the rails get too thick to grip the face, and it starts working against you. The gain flattens out well before the drawbacks stop.
What happens if my surfboard has too much volume?
It floats rather than carves. The board sits on top of the water instead of sinking its rail in, so turns feel vague and delayed, and it becomes difficult to duck dive because you cannot push it under. On steep waves the extra float can lift the nose at exactly the wrong moment. Too much volume is a more comfortable mistake than too little, but it will quietly cap how much your surfing improves.
How do I calculate the Guild Factor (GF)?
Divide a board's volume in litres by your body weight in kilograms. A 32 litre board under a 78 kg surfer gives a Guild Factor of 0.41. Doing this to a board you already love is the most reliable way to find your own number — it tells you what actually works for you, rather than what a chart predicts.
What GF ratio should a beginner use?
Around 0.50 for a beginner who is standing up in whitewater, and closer to 0.60 for a genuine first-timer. For a 75 kg beginner that is roughly 37 to 45 litres, which in practice means a soft-top or a large foam board rather than anything resembling a shortboard.
How does age and fitness affect surfboard volume?
Both act on paddle power. Recommended volume rises by about 0.01 on the Guild Factor from age 35, 0.02 from 45, and 0.03 past 55. Low paddle fitness adds roughly another 0.02, while regular swimming or paddling lets you take about 0.01 back. For an 80 kg surfer each 0.01 is a little under a litre.
Should I ride more volume in small or mushy waves?
Yes. Weak waves give you very little help getting in, so float has to make up the difference — add about 0.02 to your Guild Factor, roughly two litres for an 80 kg surfer. Most surfers who own more than one board keep something wider and thicker for exactly these days.
Does wetsuit thickness change the volume I need?
Slightly. Neoprene is buoyant, so a 5/4 winter suit adds a little float compared with boardshorts — usually under a litre of equivalent volume. It is not enough to change which board you buy, but it does explain why a board can feel looser in summer than it did in winter.
What's the difference between PU and EPS volume?
